There are two national pharmacy technician certification exams in the US: the PTCE from PTCB, which leads to the CPhT credential, and the ExCPT from NHA. They cover similar ground. The choice usually comes down to what your state and employer accept, not which exam is easier.

What's different in the content
Both test drug knowledge, federal law, safety and dispensing. The PTCE puts more weight on medications themselves. The ExCPT puts more weight on the dispensing process, including calculations and prescription handling, and has a domain on the technician's role and duties.
How to choose
- Check your state board of pharmacy first. Requirements vary by state; some name one exam, others accept either.
- Ask your employer or training programme. Many retail chains and hospitals have a preference, and some programmes prepare students for a specific exam.
- If both are accepted, the PTCE/CPhT is the more widely recognised credential, while the ExCPT suits people whose training focused on retail dispensing.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PTCE or ExCPT easier?
Neither is clearly easier. They cover similar content with different weights: the PTCE weights medications most heavily, the ExCPT the dispensing process.
Do all states accept the ExCPT?
Requirements vary by state. Check your state board of pharmacy; some specify one exam, others accept either.
What's the passing score for each?
PTCE: 1400 on a 1000–1600 scale. ExCPT: 390 on a 200–500 scale. Neither body publishes a percent-correct equivalent.
