PTCE Passing Score: What 1400 Means on PTCB's 1000–1600 Scale

You need 1400. Here's why that number doesn't convert to a percentage, and what to aim for instead.

To pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) you need a scaled score of 1400 on a range of 1000 to 1600. PTCB publishes that figure. It doesn't publish how many correct answers equal 1400, so any "you need 70%" claim online is an estimate.

How the scale works

PTCB converts your raw result onto the 1000–1600 scale so that every version of the exam holds candidates to the same standard. If your form happens to include slightly harder questions, the conversion accounts for it. That's why the pass mark is a scaled number rather than a fixed count of right answers.

80 of the 90 questions count

The PTCE has 90 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 50 minutes. 80 are scored and 10 are unscored pretest questions that PTCB is evaluating for future exams. They aren't marked, so answer every question as if it counts.

What the score is made of

The 2026 content outline weights the four knowledge areas like this:

Your result is pass or fail on the whole exam. The score report also shows how you did in each area, which is useful if you need to retake.

If you don't pass

PTCB requires a waiting period before each retake, and the wait gets longer after several attempts; each attempt is paid. Check PTCB's current retake policy before you rebook.

What to aim for in practice

  • Steady scores of about 80% or more on full, timed practice exams of 90 questions.
  • Calculations done quickly and without unit mistakes; they carry more weight on the 2026 outline.
  • The top brand/generic pairs and drug classes known cold, since Medications is over a third of the score.
