About the MBLEx exam

The MBLEx is the licensing exam used by most U.S. massage therapy regulatory boards. It covers anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, pathology and contraindications, benefits of soft tissue manipulation, client assessment, ethics and professional practice.

Our practice bank follows FSMTB's content outline and its approximate percentage for each area.

The real exam

Public information published by FSMTB. A ExamWize practice exam matches this format — it is not a copy of the exam's contents.

Format
100 multiple-choice questions in 110 minutes, delivered as a fixed-length computer-adaptive test at Pearson VUE. Unanswered questions at the time limit mean a failed exam.
Cost
FSMTB lists the application fee on its website — check FSMTB for current pricing.
Scoring
Pass/fail against a criterion-referenced standard set by FSMTB. FSMTB does not publish a percent-correct cut score, so practice scores here use a 70% line as an estimate, not a prediction.
Validity
A passing result supports a license application; it isn't itself a credential. Each state board sets its own licensing requirements.

Who it's for

  • Massage therapy students finishing their training
  • Graduates applying for state licensure
  • Therapists moving to a state that requires the MBLEx

How to prepare

  • Client assessment and ethics together make up about a third of the exam — study them as much as the sciences.
  • Learn major muscles with their origins, insertions and actions.
  • Know contraindications and areas of caution, both general and site-specific.
  • Practice answering every question in order — the CAT format doesn't let you skip back.
