FE Chemical Exam cheat sheet

A one-page summary of key FE Chemical topics.

Balances and thermodynamics

  • General balance: In − Out + Generation − Consumption = Accumulation
  • Ideal gas: PV = nRT; Raoult's law yᵢP = xᵢPᵢ*
  • Gibbs energy ΔG = ΔH − TΔS; ΔG° = −RT ln K

Reactions

  • First-order rate: −rA = kCA; half-life t½ = ln 2/k
  • Arrhenius: k = A exp(−Ea/RT)
  • CSTR (first order): X = kτ/(1 + kτ)

Transport

  • Conduction q = kAΔT/L; overall q = UAΔT_lm
  • Fick's law: J = −D dC/dx
  • Reynolds number Re = ρVD/μ

Design and economics

  • Six-tenths rule: C₂ = C₁(S₂/S₁)^0.6
  • Present worth P = F/(1 + i)ⁿ
  • Minimum reflux needs infinite stages; total reflux gives minimum stages
