Aviation Mechanic Powerplant (AMP) Knowledge Test cheat sheet

A one-page summary of the thirteen AMP subject areas (FAA-S-ACS-1, Section III).

Engines

  • Four strokes: intake, compression, power, exhaust; valve overlap near TDC
  • HP = PLANK / 33,000; differential compression test at 80 psi
  • Turbines: Brayton cycle; hot start = EGT over limit; disks life-limited in cycles

Electrical, ignition and starting

  • CSD/IDG holds 400 Hz; commutator rectifies DC generator output
  • Impulse coupling = retarded, hot starting spark; open P-lead = hot magneto
  • Turbine exciters store lethal energy — wait before disconnecting

Fuel, oil, induction and air

  • Venturi drives float carburetor; continuous-flow injection nozzles in intake ports
  • Dry sump = separate tank; chip detectors and oil analysis track wear
  • Carb ice up to ~70°F; wastegate controls boost; bleed valves prevent stall

Exhaust, fire and propellers

  • No pencil marks on exhaust parts; cascade reversers turn fan air forward
  • Class B = flammable liquids; continuous-loop resistance drops with heat
  • Overspeed → governor increases pitch; feather to cut drag; stations from hub center
